The next LEGO game to be based on ‘major IP’ in Unreal Engine

A new job listing has confirmed important details for the next LEGO game from TT Games, including the move to a familiar engine.

Warner Bros. Discovery has published a new job listing for TT Games, confirming that the next LEGO game will be based on a major IP built in the Unreal Engine. Unreal is owned by Epic Games, a company that the LEGO Group is in the middle of a partnership after a hefty investment. LEGO Fortnite currently uses Unreal as an example of the engine’s capabilities.

Whether this meant a discount on the license to use Unreal is unconfirmed, but either way we know for sure that the next LEGO game will be using the engine. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga used the NTT engine previously but reported internal complaints about its stability and missing features may have inspired the move.

These internal complaints surfaced as part of a wider report of troubles at TT Games during the development of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. This may have led to the LEGO Group ending the exclusivity agreement with the studio.

The only other notable confirmation in the job listing is the reveal that the next title will be based on a major IP, which could cover any number of properties.

One of the most likely contenders is Harry Potter, the game rights for which are owned by Warner Bros. Discovery. The older LEGO Harry Potter games are getting remastered (again) soon too.

Otherwise, DC is also an in-house property now for Warner Bros. Discovery and wouldn’t require additional licensing. At the time of writing, no other details are confirmed but it’s good to know that work is underway at TT Games following the Skywalker Saga and the expansion to other studios.

In the meantime, we have LEGO Horizon Adventures to look forward to later this year and its release date may have been revealed.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
