Siamese fighting fish swims to 10K on LEGO Ideas

A brick-built Betta splendens – also known as a Siamese fighting fish – has swum to 10K on LEGO Ideas, from a designer hoping to shed some light on ‘one of the most misunderstood fish’.

One of the most popular aquarium fish in the world, the Betta splendens, or betta, is known for being a colourful and relatively low-maintenance pet. But LEGO Ideas fan designer Farmfarm is aiming to spread the word that these fish still benefit from the same care and attention as any other aquarium animals through their 1,331-piece Betta splendens project.

“Bettas are one of the most misunderstood fish, as their beauty combined with their hearty constitution leads people to believe they can just be ‘decorations’ with minimal care,” they wrote on the project page. “In fact, bettas thrive in aquarium tanks with the proper space, heating elements, water quality, filters, and ornaments, just like all other fish.

“A betta LEGO set would be an amazing way to educate people about these wonderful fish. It would offer an opportunity for people to display the beauty of the betta without having to worry about maintenance activities or cost – ensuring live bettas aren’t kept in suboptimal conditions.”

Farmfarm has pitched two different colour options for their betta – red and blue – and both are situated on a buildable display base with freshwater plants, a tree stump ornament and a snail. The Betta splendens will now progress to the third 2024 review stage, and could one day go on to become an official LEGO set (if it gets the green light from the review board).

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
