Six new LEGO sets not to overlook in August 2024

With so many new LEGO sets available in August, it’s easy to miss a hidden gem or two. Here are six sets you shouldn’t overlook from the latest drop…

All eyes are on heavy hitters like 42172 McLaren P1, 75389 The Dark Falcon and 76286 Guardians of the Galaxy: The Milano this month (and with good reason), but there are plenty of sets that may have flown under your radar worth shouting about too. Whether you’re looking to top up a purchase to reach the minimum required spend for 40712 Micro Rocket Launchpad or just have Insiders points to burn, here are six new LEGO sets not to overlook in August 2024.

6 – 71480 Logan the Mighty Panda

Price: £24.99 / €29.99 / $29.99 Pieces: 342 Release date: August 1, 2024

Remember Legends of Chima? It’s back, in DREAMZzz form! 71480 Logan the Mighty Panda isthe latest in a string of sets from themes including Monkie Kid and DREAMZzz to act as a spiritual successor to the 2013 theme, which featured a wide variety of anthropomorphized animals (as both minifigures and larger creature builds). This one offers a giant panda mech that can be reconfigured to stand on two or four legs. Best of all? It won’t break the bank.

5 – 42174 Emirates Team New Zealand AC75 Yacht

Price: £104.99 / $119.99 / €119.99 Pieces: 962 Release date: August 1, 2024

A bumper wave of LEGO Technic sets has just raced on to shelves, with 42172 McLaren P1 and 42177 Mercedes-Benz G 500 PROFESSIONAL Line at the front of the pack. But don’t forget about 42174 Emirates Team New Zealand AC75 Yacht, which represents something different for the theme – its one and only yacht prior to this was a 330-piece set in 2018 – and is probably much taller than you’re expecting. It might just be August’s most interesting Technic set.

4 – 76297 Dancing Groot

Price: £39.99 / $44.99 / €44.99 Pieces: 459 Release date: August 1, 2024

We’ve had regular Groot, yes. And Venomised Groot. But what about dancing Groot? The LEGO Marvel team continues to tap into the enduring popularity of the MCU’s most iconic tree with 76297 Dancing Groot, and this is more than just another reskin of those previous two models: it’s a customisable, mechanical potted pal who can boogie on down with the turn of a crank. He’ll fit right in with your Botanical Collection too.

3 – 60423 Downtown Streetcar and Station

Price: £79.99 / $89.99 / €89.99 Pieces: 811 Release date: August 1, 2024

Most of the LEGO City summer sets launched in June in the UK and Europe, with a smattering held over to August in North America. But there is one brand new set from the theme debuting worldwide this month, and it’s easy to miss amongst the rest: 60423 Downtown Streetcar and Station. By all accounts this looks like a strong slice of civilian life ready to expand any budding LEGO city (or perhaps bring together a sprawling metropolis), and the price doesn’t seem egregious given you get a few track pieces in the box as well.

2 – 31153 Modern House

Price: £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99 Pieces: 939 Release date: August 1, 2024

This is a shout-out to US readers specifically, because the two new summer LEGO Creator 3-in-1 sets have just dropped stateside after launching in June in other regions. Chief among them is 31153 Modern House, a set revealed so long ago that you’d be forgiven for forgetting about it completely by now – but one that’s definitely worth keeping in mind as you plan out your purchases for this month. It’s another home run for a theme at the top of its game right now.

1 – 75374 Onyx Cinder

Price: £124.99 / $139.99 / €139.99 Pieces: 1,325 Release date: August 1, 2024

Maybe August’s easiest new LEGO set to overlook is 75374 Onyx Cinder, because it was only officially revealed on July 31 – so you might not even know it’s now available to buy from LEGO.com. The Star Wars: Skeleton Crew set recreates a ship we have no context for and throws in characters we don’t know, because its tie-in show only starts airing on Disney+ in December. But there’s something to be said for a LEGO Star Wars set without the burden of context…

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
