Star Wars: Lando Calrissian is upgrading from the small screen to the big screen
Instead of a Star Wars TV show centred around Lando Calrissian, the smooth-talking smuggler will now be appearing in his own movie.
After it was announced just in July that brothers Donald and Steven Glover would be joining forces to write the Lando Calrissian TV show, a spin-off from Solo: A Star Wars Story, it’s now being reported by Variety that the TV series has become a movie. First suggested while Steven was appearing on the Pablo Terres Finds Out podcast, Lucasfilm has confirmed the switch to the publication.
Steven also added that the WGA and SAG/AFTRA strikes have contributed to the change, saying on the podcast: “It’s not even a show…the idea right now is to do a movie. Right now, because of the strike, it’s kind of like telephone, all of the information.”
Donald, who of course played Lando Calrissian in Solo, has seemed excited about the prospect of returning to the character, saying he “would love to play Lando again” in an interview with GQ in April of this year.
“It’s a fun time, being him,” the actor continued. “It just has to be the right way to do it. Time is precious. The past couple of years, this pandemic shit, it really had people experience time… People realize their time is valuable. You only get so much.
“I’m not interested in doing anything that’s going to be a waste of my time or just a paycheck. I’d much rather spend time with people that I enjoy. It just has to be the right thing, and I think it could be. Lando is definitely somebody I like to hang out with.”
Seeing as Donald and his brother are now seemingly at the writing helm of the movie, you would imagine that would give him enough creative control to be comfortable stepping into the role once more. There’s no word on when we might be able to see the Lando film, but with it still being in the early writing stages and in the midst of the Hollywood strikes, we’d expect it to be a few years away at a minimum.
