Star Wars: Skeleton Crew reveals a new side of the galaxy

The first trailer for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew has revealed an unexpectedly new side to the galaxy that could be all too perfect for the LEGO Group.

The debut trailer for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew has been unveiled at D23, teasing the adventures to come in the upcoming series with clear inspiration from ‘The Goonies,’80s Amblin movies including The Goonies and E.T. Our initial report focused on the new ship – The Onyx Cinder – which has its own LEGO set now available before the series streams from December 3. Earlier in the trailer though, a brand-new side of the galaxy is showcased that hits much closer to home.

The first parts of the trailer feature the young cast of characters living their normal and comparatively comfortable lives in a society that greatly resembles our own, complete with suburbs, streets, trams and roads that we’ve never seen in Star Wars before. This isn’t exactly a society like Coruscant or Mos Eisley and is likely intended to bring a sense of familiarity to the series.

While there’s only one LEGO Star Wars: Skeleton Crew confirmed so far – 75374 The Onyx Cinder – this new location opens up a vast realm of possibilities for both the LEGO Group and LEGO enthusiasts in the future. The LEGO Group is all too familiar with sets based on reality with City and Friends and the sets from both themes bear a striking resemblance to Skeleton Crew’s society with no science-fiction aesthetic.

Should Skeleton Crew prove to be popular, this could be a way for the LEGO Group to combine LEGO City and Star Wars in the future, though it will almost certainly depend on Skeleton Crew’s success and how this society is received by fans.

It may even provide an excuse for a LEGO Star Wars modular model in the future similar to Marvel’s recent sets but that’s probably more unrealistic. For now, it seems likely that the focus of LEGO Star Wars will remain on battle packs and spaceships unless this side of Skeleton Crew proves to be a standout success.

At least Star Wars: Skeleton Crew has opened our eyes to a side of the galaxy that we would likely have never seen otherwise. Skeleton Crew starts streaming on December 3 and the series’ only LEGO set is available now in the form of 75374 The Onyx Cinder.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
