Star Wars: Skeleton Crew skips SDCC, so what’s going on with the LEGO set?

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew failed to make an appearance at San Diego Comic-Con, even while we’re potentially just days away from its first tie-in LEGO set appearing on shelves.

75374 Onyx Cinder has been popping up in stores in the US for weeks now, and an Amazon listing suggests it will launch worldwide on August 1 (alongside an entire wave of other LEGO Star Wars sets). But the LEGO Group has yet to formally announce the set – and Lucasfilm hasn’t even shared a release date for the Goonies-esque Disney+ streaming show.

All eyes were on SDCC over the weekend for at least a tiny update on Skeleton Crew, but the Lucasfilm panel instead concentrated on comic books (at a comic convention, wild), novels and action figures. Most of the focus was on The Acolyte and its supporting characters, as Disney kept eyes on its latest series rather than what’s potentially right around the corner.

But with 75374 Onyx Cinder seemingly days away from being released, Disney and Lucasfilm must surely be gearing up for some kind of Skeleton Crew reveal. Otherwise the 1,325-piece set is going to debut with pretty much zero context for either its funky grey spaceship or its intriguing cast of characters, from Jod, Wim and KB to Fern and Neel, whoever they are.

It’s worth remembering that this set was originally rumoured to release in January, but has seemingly been pushed back by a full seven months to account for delays to its source material. If the LEGO Group and Lucasfilm are happy to put it out on to shelves now rather than continuing to wait, it feels all the more likely that we’re going to learn something – anything – about Skeleton Crew very soon.

Yet if that is the case, why wouldn’t they take advantage of the audience generated by San Diego Comic-Con? It’s a real head-scratcher, and means the full reveal of 75374 Onyx Cinder is seemingly going to go down to the wire. For now, check out the full LEGO Star Wars August 2024 line-up in the table below.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
