Two LEGO Ideas sets based on ’80s IP are officially on the way

The results of a LEGO Ideas competition based on IP from the ’80s have been revealed, confirming which two fan-designed sets are officially on their way.

The LEGO Ideas team has confirmed the results of a competition that asked fan designers to submit would-be LEGO sets based on IPs from the ’80s. Out of all the submissions, LEGO Ideas whittled it down to five sets. From there, not one but two fan votes took place back in May – and now the results are in.

It’s now officially confirmed that terauma‘s Gizmo from Gremlins and Delusion Brick‘s The Goonies (1985) are joining the LEGO Ideas theme. Presumably, the designs will still need to be fine-tuned and finalised in collaboration with professional LEGO designers, so release dates for this duo of ’80s-inspired sets could still be a way off.

The Goonies (1985)

Delusion Brick was inspired by their own love for the Goonies, describing the franchise as “an extraordinary adventure brimming with the spirit of youth and camaraderie.” The set itself features a variety of the central characters, including Mikey, Brand, Chunk, Mouth, Andy, Stef, Data, Sloth, Jake, Francis, and Mama Fratelli as minifigures, as well as the main build that traverses through many of the adventures experienced by the gang, from the mysterious caves of One-Eyed Willy to the enigmatic lost pirate ship.

Next up is an homage to Gremlins, namely in the form of a buildable Gizmo. Made up of 400 elements, the designer also states that at least in the first submission, the option for Gremlins 2’s Rambo style is available as a bonus build. Of course, we won’t know if this remains in the final model for a while yet but the posable buildable figure is a pretty accurate likeness even at this early stage.

Here’s a quick reminder of all the LEGO Ideas sets in production at the time of writing.
