We found more Series 25 minifigure codes for Brick Search, and…

There have been major developments in the on-going battle to identify LEGO Minifigures Series 25:  the Brick Search app has added new scannable codes and is on the lookout for more.

At the start of January, we at Brick Search – the LEGO set app available here for iOS devices and here for Android – came up with the best LEGO Minifigures Series 25 hack yet – the ability to scan codes on the base of the blind boxes to see what’s inside.

The LEGO Group introduced a new feature on the packaging of Series 25, a data matrix code on the base, next to the barcode. Some boxes have a smaller code that can’t be read and some have a bigger code that can (see the image below for which data matrix code is which) – but scanning it with a QR code reader only gives a long string of numbers.

Brick Search, building on its existing barcode scanner, was configured to scan the large data matrix code and match the information on it with the app’s database. Each number matches a specific minifigure, and scanning the data matrix with Brick Search shows you the minifigure in that box.

It was hailed as a game-changer – removing the uncertainty over which minifigure you were buying and making it easy to collect all 12, or duplicates of one particular minifigure to build an army of Vampire Knights or a herd of goats.

But this was all new – the introduction of data matrix codes on the base of boxes and Brick Search’s ability to scan them. It happened quickly and was a step into the unknown – would this work? Early responses were encouraging: LEGO fans around the world started using Brick Search to scan Series 25 minifigure boxes and finally get the minifigures they wanted.

And then we started to see people saying that they had scanned the larger data matrix code and Brick Search had been unable to recognise it. The reason? Our best guess was that a new production run produced new codes.

Feedback from the readers of Brick Fanatics suggested that was indeed the case – and thanks to this brilliant group of people (who have excellent taste in LEGO websites) we have been able to add the new codes for the EU-produced Series 25 minifigures to Brick Search.

That means Series 25 boxes with the larger data matrix code should scan for everyone in Europe and the United Kingdom once again – if you have a box with the larger code on it and it doesn’t scan, please get in touch on [email protected] and we’ll look into why that may be the case. Pictures of the code would be particularly helpful.

And that’s the same for North America and the rest of the world – if you find a Series 25 minifigure box with a large data matrix code that the Brick Search app can’t recognise, email [email protected] with where you bought the box (store and location) and pictures of the code. You’d be giving us – and your fellow LEGO fans in that part of the world – a huge helping hand.

If you haven’t yet downloaded Brick Search and want to, you can do so here for iOS devices and here for Android.
