Here’s what else you could get for the price of LEGO Star Wars Jabba’s Sail Barge

We’ve broken down what else you could get for the controversially high price of LEGO Star Wars UCS 75307 Jabba’s Sail Barge.

LEGO Star Wars 75307 Jabba’s Sail Barge was revealed just over 24 hours ago and the general reactions can be summed up in three words: great but expensive. A UCS sail barge has been on every LEGO Star Wars fan’s wishlist for a while now but it’s hard to look past the eye-watering price.

We’ve already speculated that it would feel like a better price if it was combined with its ideal companion set and that’s made especially clear when you look at other sets in that price point. For £429.99 / $499.99 / €499.99, you could get eight copies of 75385 Ahsoka Tano’s Duel on Peridea with change for the cab home – an overpriced set in itself. You could make the most epic Clone Wars battle scene with a whopping 17 copies of 75372 Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack, or pay homage to everyone’s favourite bounty hunter with 47 copies of 75344 Boba Fett’s Starship Microfighter.

Perhaps some more realistic comparisons for what LEGO shoppers could legitimately spend over £400 on can be found in LEGO Marvel, Icons and Harry Potter. There are just three other LEGO sets that have the exact same price as 75307 Jabba’s Sail Barge, so let’s look at what each one has to offer to evaluate whether the LEGO Star Wars set is in line with other themes.

76269 Avengers Tower

Released just last year, 76269 Avengers Tower is perhaps the closest comparison to 75307 Jabba’s Sail Barge from another theme. It’s an iconic location, long awaited by fans, and was the headline release for LEGO Marvel last year.

A common comparison for evaluating LEGO set prices is piece count. In that, 76269 Avengers Tower has 75307 Jabba’s Sail Barge beat, with around 1,300 pieces more in the box to flesh out the high-rise building. That goes a pretty long way, with the LEGO Marvel set being 90cm high to the LEGO Star Wars one’s 77cm length.

Of course, size isn’t everything but it’s hard to ignore the fact that 76269 Avengers Tower packs in more detail, with five interior rooms and side builds of a Leviathan, the Quinjet, and two Chitauri chariots to flesh out the scene. Even looking at the minifigures, 76269 Avengers Tower boasts 31 minifigures to 75307 Jabba’s Sail Barge‘s 11. While there are some repeated characters in 76269 Avengers Tower, the end result means the set is well-populated, despite its size.

All of that comes together to result in not just feeling like you’re getting a lot more bang for your buck with 76269 Avengers Tower but genuinely getting that, no matter which yardstick you’re measuring with.

10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell

Next up, let’s look at 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell. Once again, we’re looking at a much bigger piece count, with more than 2,000 pieces to play with in the LEGO The Lord of the Rings set. That pays off with the extraordinary level of detail that you can see both from afar and up close, from the intricately tiled roof and well-designed interior.

The layout of 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell is very different to 75307 Jabba’s Sail Barge, forming a dynamic landscape scene rather than a single structure with rooms inside. The number of minifigures is much closer between the two sets (although 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell still has four more), but that’s perhaps fair seeing as this is one of just a few LEGO The Lord of the Rings sets.

LEGO Star Wars fans can feasibly populate 75307 Jabba’s Sail Barge with minifigures from other sets – but at that price point, should you really have to? Where 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell is seeking to be your one-and-done LOTR set (having once been the only set of this scale on the market), the LEGO Star Wars designers might expect 75307 Jabba’s Sail Barge to slot into an existing collection and therefore not needing quite as many characters.

However, when you’re asking people to part with over £400, it feels like that set should be able to stand on its own two feet (or brick-built base) just like the others on this list.

76405 Hogwarts Express Collectors’ Edition

Last but not least, we come to 76405 Hogwarts Express Collectors’ Edition. Once again, we’re met with a large disparity in pieces, featuring around 1,200 more pieces in the LEGO Harry Potter build than 75307 Jabba’s Sail Barge. There are also 20 minifigures, spanning multiple years spent at Platform 9 3/4.

76405 Hogwarts Express Collectors’ Edition shares some similar obstacles as 75307 Jabba’s Sail Barge. Being a vehicle, it’s admittedly tough to think of how to flesh out a LEGO set beyond just that. In the case of the LEGO Harry Potter designers, they opted to include a section of track for the Hogwarts Express to sit on, as well as a wall from the platform itself for the information plaque to sit on.

In the case of 75307 Jabba’s Sail Barge, it of course spends most of its time in the sands of Tatooine where there isn’t much scenery to expand upon. However, the answer lies in another set released this year: 75396 Desert Skiff & Sarlacc Pit. Including the scenery and extra ship would have ticked that box.

It would also have been fun to see the display stands for the minifigures, Jabba, and information plaque be slightly more creative than simple black, just like in 76405 Hogwarts Express Collectors’ Edition. The plaque is incorporated into the platform, for a more cohesive display, rather than some rather random black sections that don’t meld with the rest of the set.

All in all, it’s quite easy to see areas where 75307 Jabba’s Sail Barge could have gone just a little bit further to feel truly worth its £429.99 / $499.99 / €499.99 price tag. If the price doesn’t scare you off, 75397 Jabba’s Sail Barge will go on sale for LEGO Insiders for £429.99 / $499.99 / €499.99 on October 3, and the first to buy will receive 40730 Luke Skywalker’s Lightsaber for free to help sweeten the deal. Click here to check out its full minifigure line-up and take a closer look inside the 3,942-piece model in our detailed review.
