What could a full LEGO The Legend of Zelda theme look like?

The online store and box of 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 may hint at a LEGO The Legend of Zelda theme and there’s countless potential for sets.

Following the official reveal of the first LEGO The Legend of Zelda set – 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 – the themes page on LEGO.com has been updated to include LEGO The Legend of Zelda, under which only the Deku Tree model is listed. It’s worth noting that the themes page also has the likes of the LEGO The Lord of the Rings, suggesting that it is a full theme too and that has two massive models and a range of BrickHeadz.

At the time of writing LEGO The Legend of Zelda only has 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 though this could change one day. That set is debuting a range of The Legend of Zelda-specific elements though, the likes of which are uncommon for one-off LEGO models – take 10327 Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter and it’s lack of exclusive pieces for example.

To our knowledge, 76989 Horizon Forbidden West: Tallneck was not specifically sorted into any theme, be it LEGO Horizon or LEGO Icons, before its retirement though this isn’t to say that a LEGO The Legend of Zelda theme is definitely on the way. While that included an exclusive minifigure piece, it may not be the end of the road for LEGO Horizon just yet according to rumours.

“The Deku Tree was the first element from The Legend of Zelda we wanted to represent using LEGO bricks,” states  Eiji Aonuma, Producer of The Legend of Zelda series at Nintendo in the reveal press release for 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1, notably using the word ‘first’.

At the very least, the LEGO Group and Nintendo appear to be open to the idea of more LEGO The Legend of Zelda and given that pre-orders of 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 have quickly sold out, that wouldn’t be surprising. Should there be an opportunity for more LEGO The Legend of Zelda in the future, there are a few directions a theme could go.

The LEGO The Lord of the Rings strategy

LEGO The Lord of the Rings appears to have returned as a theme, though not with a full line of sets as it first had back in 2012. Now, the theme includes a variety of BrickHeadz and two massive models – 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell and 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr with plenty of room for expansion.

Though 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell and 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr are both part of LEGO Icons, the sets seem to be shared across multiple themes as is the case with the BrickHeadz. This has proven to be an uncommon, but viable strategy for unique themes. The same could work well for The Legend of Zelda now that the necessary specialized pieces are in production

LEGO The Legend of Zelda could consist of one-off models inspired by various locations and moments from the franchise’s history, as has been pitched via LEGO Ideas previously.

Of particular note and that would fit into this category based on official sets based on licenses are the Breath of the Wild Stables from HanwasyellowfirstThe Legend of Zelda BOTW: Hyrule Castle and BrianGreen’s 1986 The Legend of Zelda model. There’s room for BrickHeadz too with plenty of characters from Link to Tingle to cover.

The standard LEGO theme strategy

Alternatively, LEGO The Legend of Zelda could embrace a more familiar strategy for a full theme, taking inspiration from the likes of LEGO Super Mario, LEGO Animal Crossing and LEGO Monkie Kid.

LEGO Monkie Kid’s range of vehicle customisation sets, including this year’s 80050 Creative Vehicles would lend themselves well to a Tears of the Kingdom vehicle maker model with pre-built modules to arrange just as you can in the game.

Alternatively, both LEGO Super Mario and LEGO Animal Crossing demonstrate the potential of game-specific references in models based on a wider game franchise, similar to flailx’s rejected King of Red Lions LEGO Ideas projected. Hyrule Castle could also serve as a flagship model for the theme with a playset approach similar to Artem Biziaev‘s submission on LEGO Ideas.

Whether the LEGO Group is planning to delve into the potential of a full LEGO The Legend of Zelda theme is unknown at the time of writing but at least we can look forward to 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 on September 1, 2024, for £259.99 / $299.99 / €299.99.
