Four reasons to love LEGO Great Deku Tree – even if you’re not a Zelda fan

LEGO The Legend of Zelda 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 has certainly grabbed the attention of Zelda fans, but it’s worth a closer look even if you’ve never played the games.

77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 is packed full of references to Zelda, grabbing the attention of long-time and newer fans of the franchise alike. However, those aren’t the only people who might be intrigued by the 2,500-piece set – especially for fantasy fans. Between 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1, 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale, and 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell (among others), there’s tons of new pieces and building techniques that can help custom builds go further.

With that in mind, here’s a few areas we picked out from 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 that might capture the interest of those who aren’t familiar with the world of Zelda.

Let’s hear it for the printed shields

LEGO Castle fans can come up with more factions and invading armies with these intricately printed shields. Made to a similar size and shape as previous shields, they can fit seamlessly in to a bigger army landscape. Here’s hoping they end up LEGO Pick a Brick to gear up medieval armies in style.

Elves can have more varied looks

The new variations of combined hair and elven ears can add more variety and choice to your pointy-eared minifigures. One of the Links even boasts a different hairpiece to his two counterparts, meaning 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 brings three new hairpieces to the party. Spoilt for choice!

77092 Great Deku Tree could belong to the Botanical Collection

It’s no secret that the LEGO Group loves to expand its Botanical Collection, even creating sets from other themes like LEGO Marvel and Super Mario based on fantastical plants that wouldn’t look out of place alongside the LEGO Icons models. 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 fits into this category: take away the minifigures and Zelda synbols and you’ve got a fun cross between 76433 Mandrake and 10281 Bonsai Tree. It comes on its own black base, ideal for display, and so could easily go towards expanding a Botanical Collection display.

Fantasy fans can get creative in custom builds

Zooming closer into the details, there are various new printed elements just for 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1. While they are pulled straight from the world of Zelda, they could also function to add extra magic and detail to other fantasy sets. These leaves with faces can work as any generic woodland sprite or fairy – or even just to jazz up an otherwise mundane tree. Ultimately, any of the brightly-coloured or uniquely-printed elements from the LEGO Zelda set can open up new opportunities for creative custom builders.

You can pre-order 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 right now for £259.99 / €299.99 in the UK and Europe, while Americans will now need to wait until its wider release on September 1 to buy it for $299.99. In the meantime, take a closer look at the model here.
