2024 is the year LEGO Star Wars gives the fans what they want

LEGO Star Wars is cooking up some weird and wonderful concepts this year – and many seem to have been inspired by the community’s wildest dreams.

Spend any length of time in a LEGO Star Wars reddit community, online forum, or even the comment section of a hotly-debated YouTube video or Instagram post and you’ll soon hear any number of wild and fantastical wishes that fans want to see from the theme. Some have always seemed far too unlikely to ever come to fruition, but perhaps the LEGO Star Wars team has been paying closer attention than anyone thought.

The recent wave of rumours for the year LEGO Star Wars will celebrate its 25th anniversary, sourced from Instagram users 1414falconfan and childish_landino_chronicles, has got some real curveballs in the mix, as well as some long-awaited updates that could have come straight out of a diehard fan’s dreams. Let’s dive into a few examples…

LEGO brings Uglies into brick form

Two of the most iconic LEGO Star Wars ships are believed to get a redesign in 2024 in the rumoured 75393 X-wing and TIE Fighter – with a twist. Apparently, you’ll be able to swap the wings and bodies of the two ships, so you’d end up with a TIE Fighter hull framed by X-wings and a X-wing body held aloft by TIE wings.

Sounds kooky – but not quite unique. In fact, this concept has been around in the world of Star Wars for some time in the concept of Uglies, commonly seen in Star Wars comicbooks like the X-Wing Rogue Squadron series. The idea of Uglies is that ships were patched together with parts from different ships, producing vehicles like the X-TIE Fighter (an X-Wing with TIE Fighter solar panels) and the TYE-Wing (the reverse).

Many of these mismatched ships weren’t exactly the peak of galactic engineering and were mainly used by pirates and criminals. It was commonly thought, for example, that a regular X-Wing could easily dispatch an X-TIE Fighter, with the latter featuring inferior weaponry. Indeed, the TYE-Wing was nicknamed the DYE-Wing for the high mortality rate of its pilots.

Even if some of them couldn’t fly all that well, they were certainly a sight to see around the galaxy and the mix-and-match approach that’s rumoured to be on the way for 75393 X-wing and TIE Fighter appears to be an homage to this long-standing breed of ship.

Black is the Falcon’s best colour

As one of the most popular LEGO Star Wars ships ever, there are plenty of custom builds of the iconic junkship, including two junky recreations made from leftover LEGO parts. One ever-present custom build is the all-black Falcon – something that the LEGO Group could be tapping into with the rumoured 75389 Dark Millennium Falcon.

There have been countless official Millennium Falcon sets over the years, so bringing something new to the table can be tricky. This rumour suggests that a dark version of the ship (along with some cursed timeline minifigures) is on the way, giving official life to a version of the ship that LEGO Star Wars fans have been building themselves for decades.

A fan favourite makes his triumphant return

Arguably more popular among the community than any official Star Wars character, Jedi Bob had spawned conspiracy theories about his return that now appear to be backed up by the recent rumours of 75388 Jedi Bob’s Starfighter. Priced at $39.99 for 310 pieces, it’s a compact set where the main focus is clearly on the anonymous character that the community ran riot with.

If you don’t know already, Jedi Bob started out as an anonymous figure in 2002’s 7163 Republic Gunship, only gaining his official name seven years later in he original LEGO Star Wars Visual Dictionary in 2009. Since then, he has become a beloved figure among the LEGO Star Wars community, with many calling for him to make a return in sets – and now it seems that the LEGO Star Wars designers are granting those wishes at long last.

Plugging holes in minifigure line-ups

Disney+’s Ahsoka series brought a wealth of fantastic minifigures (special mention goes to Hera and Ahsoka herself) but there were certainly some gaps to be filled. Ahsoka herself got a new look, dressed all in white following her encounters in the World Between Worlds. Both Grand Admiral Thrawn and Ezra Bridger made their long-awaited returns and live-action debuts – but without a minifigure design to go alongside them. Plus, Captain Enoch offered a prime opportunity for a different Stormtrooper head, thanks to his gold-plated helm.

Complaints were levelled last year at sets like 75362 Ahsoka Tano’s T-6 Jedi Shuttle and 75357 Ghost & Phantom II for not including these characters but, if 2024 LEGO Star Wars rumours are to be believed, a stacked minifigure cast will include all of those minifigures and more in one $40 set, 75385 Battle on Peridea: Ahsoka (in her white outfit), Ezra, Thrawn, Enoch and Morgan Elsbeth (who’s said to have a new face print). With a piece count of just 382, it seems most of the budget and price-per-piece ratio is going on these minifigures, so you’d imagine they’ll be detailed enough to satisfy even the pickiest of LEGO Star Wars fans.

A prequel icon gets an update

Last but certainly not least, another LEGO Star Wars fan bucketlist item that’s now rumoured to be on the way is an update on Qui-Gon Jinn. Despite being many people’s favourite Jedi (at least if you’re a prequels fan), Qui-Gon hasn’t had a fresh minifigure look since 2017’s 75169 Duel on Naboo. Looking ahead to 2024, he’s rumoured to be making a return appearance, presumably with a fresh design, in 75383 Sith Infiltrator, a recreation of Darth Maul’s Scimitar (which itself hasn’t been a LEGO set since 2015).

Seeing as Qui-Gon returned to the small screen in 2022’s Obi-Wan Kenobi (even in a small cameo), it was perhaps only a matter of time until we got another minifigure of the Jedi Master. His outfit is likely to be a refreshed version of the tan robes and brown cape that came before, alongside minifigures of Darth Maul, Padmé Amidala, and Captain Panaka.

Suffice to say, if any of what’s been rumoured proves to be true (which we won’t know for sure until we get an official reveal from the LEGO Group itself), then no one will be able to say that the LEGO Star Wars theme is dull and grey anymore.

When will we get a Queen Amidale return? TPM is 25 years old. Lego Star Wars is also 25 years old and the highly sought after minifig is from 2012. Time for an update!
