LEGO partners with Blockbuster for retro SDCC 2023 booth

The LEGO Group has teamed up with Blockbuster Video to build a retro LEGO booth at San Diego Comic-Con 2023.

If you’re on the ground at SDCC this year, you’ll be able to live like it’s the 1990s at the LEGO Brickbuster Video booth, which is styled on classic Blockbuster Video stores – complete with dozens of VHS tapes recreating retro movies through a LEGO lens. Located at #2829, the booth features more than 50 new LEGO sets, including the upcoming August Marvel releases and September Star Wars sets.

There’s also a hands-on building table, a pop-up LEGO Store to buy the new sets weeks ahead of their wide release date, and life-size LEGO models designed to resemble classic cardboard standees. You won’t find any major exclusive sets or minifigures, but the LEGO Group is giving away LEGO Brickbuster Video membership cards and pins, and there’s a Build Your Own Minifigure experience with a limited-edition torso up for grabs.

“We always aim to provide an unforgettable fan experience at San Diego Comic-Con,” said Maddie Boushie, senior brand manager at the LEGO Group. “There was a time where you could find your favourite movies, video games and TV shows all under one magical roof at the local Blockbuster, so we knew the retro video store could help unify all the exciting LEGO play worlds we offer.

“Our LEGO Brickbuster Video experience houses beloved entertainment and video gaming properties together with new LEGO building sets and hands-on building activities, offering fans a chance to unlock their imaginations and inspire their next playful adventure.”

The LEGO SDCC 2023 schedule includes two panels, three signing events and a Q&A with the designer behind the ‘cardboard’ standees, which encompass a Captain America statue (that changes daily) and a scene inspired by 75353 Endor Speeder Chase Diorama. I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
