LEGO 10332 Medieval Town Square leaves LEGO Castle fans wanting more

Despite some foibles, LEGO Icons 10332 Medieval Town Square has largely gone down well with fans – but that’s left them wanting more.

One day on from LEGO Icons 10332 Medieval Town Square’s official reveal, the dust has started to settle on people’s initial reactions to the set. The Brick Fanatics team had mostly positive things to say about the set in our own first reactions but there are some areas of criticism being raised by other fans in the LEGO community.

Nonetheless, the headline appears to be that, while 10332 Medieval Town Square has a lot to offer, it also exposes what’s missing from the growing number of modern LEGO sets based on the original Castle theme. Read on to see what people from across the community thought in more detail.

Another strong entry in a fledgling theme

All in all, fans appear to be impressed by the level of detail in 10332 Medieval Town Square, and especially how well it fits in with other medieval-era sets that come before it. We’ve already pointed out just how many LEGO Castle references are tucked away in the LEGO Icons set and the overall effect is certainly impressive – and noticeable, judging from people’s reactions.

“Finally we’re eating good with castle sets,” agreed a reddit commenter. “Between the castle, the GWP that came with it for the forest hideout, 31120 Medieval Castle, 21325 Medieval Blacksmith, and now 10332 Medieval Town Square, we’re finally entering the stage where Castle is thriving.” – reddit

…but there’s still room to grow

Nonetheless, with more and more sets creating an unofficial sub-theme, that inevitably leads to fresh critiques. Another reddit user pointed out that there’s still a gap in the semi-revived LEGO Castle theme, writing: “If only they would release some smaller sets to fill things out. I love everything they’ve released, but the $100+ price points not so much.”

Other commenters agreed that smaller sets and especially battle packs with four or five soldiers or village people could help to fill out these sets even more. With the release of 10332 Medieval Town Square, which focuses more on the peaceful side of medieval life, such ‘battle packs’ could also include farmers, artists, civilians or even animals. This brings us neatly on to another common criticism of 10332 Medieval Town Square

Where are all the animals in 10332 Medieval Town Square?

There might be a recoloured grey goat, along with a cat and a squirrel, but fans are clamouring for more animals to really bring this medieval town to life. After all, there’s plenty of creative pursuits that would rely on animals, from eggs and dairy products to bake the goods for the cart to the wool needed to weave together the tapestry. Plus, unless the minifigures are stronger than they look and are able to pull the cart themselves, there’s certainly a missing horse or ox in the square.

“I like 10332 Medieval Town Square a lot but would have liked another goat, a cow or two, or even a horse,” mused one reddit user. “The cart looks a bit empty with no animal to pull it.”

Some fans can’t help but compare

Whenever a set is a remake or clearly inspired from a previous model, it’s inevitable for long-term fans to draw comparisons between the two – and 10332 Medieval Town Square is no different.

“It’s cool and all but comparing it to the #10193 Castle Medieval Market Village set from 2009 and it’s just so … plain?” critiques another reddit commenter. “At [that price and size], I would expect more colours and life to it. The old set was…more detailed and worth the price.”

However, other people saw improvements between the original set and its spiritual successor, with one person writing: “The original has almost no interior. If you look at the interior of the buildings in the new set, there’s so much going on there. It’s a question of whether you play in the open area or in the building.”

It’s a fair point to raise and means that 10332 Medieval Town Square is bringing something new to the table. We dug into this in more detail in our in-depth comparison here.

To make up your own mind about LEGO Icons 10332 Medieval Town Square, you’ll need to wait until March 1 for LEGO Insiders or March 4 for everyone else, when the set will go on sale for £199.99 / $229.99 / €229.99.
