LEGO reveals official details of upcoming smart brick and sets

Official details of a new interactive smart brick included with an upcoming LEGO City set have been revealed, as well as three accompanying models.

The LEGO Group recently revealed the first details of 60691 Jungle Explorer Base Camp, an upcoming set that will feature a new interactive brick and three interactive minifigures. Those in the UK interested in testing out the LEGO City set can do so via a trial program for families, with the technology potentially revolutionising future model releases.

A second mysterious set was also revealed, although at the time it lacked a name or any other additional details. However, the LEGO Group has now not only released information on three new LEGO City sets that will be compatible with the interactive brick, but also a first look at the actual element in question.

Billed as ‘the smartest LEGO brick we’ve ever built,’ the blue and clear piece has received its own dedicated landing page, complete with short clips of the technology in action.

The smart brick is said to respond directly to everything you do, such as the way you move it and how you build and rebuild sets with it, and the element appears to work in tandem with special tile tags in each set that have a specific image on them.

For instance, 60691 Jungle Explorer Base Camp comes with eight tags that activate various ambient jungle and animal noises, that bring a truck, a helicopter and scanners to life with realistic sound effects, that can detect brick colours and that light up a rumbling volcano, as if it’s about to erupt.

There’s also a toilet tag that offers up a new experience with every minifigure that’s placed inside the portable loo, something we can’t wait to try out.

60691 Jungle Explorer Base Camp is also confirmed to come with a waterfall, medical centre with flashing indicator, three unnamed interactive minifigures and a wireless charger, presumably for the smart brick.

Different movements of models that include the smart brick, or combinations of tags and minifigures, will affect its functions too. That’s evidenced in the second new LEGO City set to be revealed with 60692 The Lost Crocodile Temple, where an airboat’s rear propellor spins round as the vehicle is played with. The build features a large snapping crocodile on top of the temple that lights up and snaps open, as well as a Trudy Skorvy minifigure and a few animal figures,

A third LEGO City set in the upcoming line-up has also been revealed in the shape of 60693 Survivor Island Seaplane. The model come with the aircraft itself, which transforms into an island shelter with campfire and palm tree, a Miles Waei minifigure, plus three animal figures.

It’s worth noting that, initially at least, the smart brick will only be included with 60691 Jungle Explorer Base Camp, so that set will be required if you want to interact with the other two LEGO City models. It’s also a little unclear at this stage how the interactive minifigures will work with the smart brick, so we’ll hopefully find out more in the months to come.

We’ll bring you more details of the LEGO smart brick as they come through, as well as piece counts, prices and release dates for the three upcoming LEGO City sets.
