LEGO Star Wars 75389 The Dark Falcon isn’t the set we expected

Although it’s certainly a striking Rebuild the Galaxy set, 75389 The Dark Falcon isn’t quite the LEGO Star Wars model many may have been expecting.

We got our first look yesterday at two new LEGO Star Wars builds, courtesy of French retailer Fnac. 75389 The Dark Falcon and 75393 TIE Fighter and X-Wing Mash-up are both based on ships due to appear in the upcoming Rebuild the Galaxy animated special on Disney+, with a third set that may be joining them soon.

75389 The Dark Falcon comes in at 1,579 pieces for €174.95, is due to launch on August 1 and includes bonkers minifigures of  Beach Luke, Jedi Vader, Bounty Hunter C-3PO, Darth Dev, Darth Jar Jar and Darth Rey.

The twisted version of the iconic smuggler’s ship made its debut in the LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy trailer that dropped last month. Despite the footage featuring what looked to be a recoloured version of 75192 Millennium Falcon, the finished craft has much more in common with a soon-to-retire LEGO Star Wars model.

Although there are plenty of similarities between 2019’s 75257 Millennium Falcon and 75389 The Dark Falcon, the vehicle revealed in the trailer for the Disney+ show doesn’t quite match the overall look of the upcoming set.

For starters, there’s no sign of the Death Star superlaser-style radar dish that comes with 75389 The Dark Falcon and there’s a front-opening landing ramp that Darth Jar Jar descends down, instead of the standard side ramp.

Also missing are many other cosmetic touches, such as the sinster red cockpit and various greeblings on the ship’s hull, although long lead production times for the special and the set may explain the many visual changes.

The trailer also lacked any glimpses of the inside of the ship, but we now know that 75389 The Dark Falcon will feature a throne for Darth Jar Jar, a holding cell and even a dark version of Dejarik. We’ll have a much better idea of what to expect from the LEGO Star Wars set when it’s officially revealed, complete with high-res images and full international prices.

Disney+ subscribers will be able to watch LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy when the four-piece animated special airs on the streaming service on September 13, 2024.
