LEGO Star Wars 75398 C-3PO isn’t the first large-scale version of the droid

In addition to the upcoming 75398 C-3PO, only one other large-scale version of the LEGO Star Wars protocol droid has been released to date.

Thanks to an online retailer, we got our first look this week at 75398 C-3PO, with the LEGO Star Wars build said to be releasing on August 1, 2024 for roughly £119.99 / $139.99 / €139.99. The 38cm high model appears to take a pearl gold approach to the fussy protocol droid’s appearance, bolstered by printed and stickered elements rounding out the build, with the set likely to be in scale with the existing 75379 R2-D2.

While 75398 C-3PO may well manage to successfully capture the overall look of the character (just don’t mention Threepio’s eyes), this actually isn’t the first large-scale version of the LEGO Star Wars droid that’s been released to date.

Back in 2001, the Technic theme dropped 8007 C-3PO, a 341-piece model that was constructed from a mix of gold elements, although exposed sections of the build made the LEGO Star Wars set look more like the unfinished Episode I version of the character. The droid’s head, shoulders, elbows, wrists and fingers could all be repositioned, although movement was quite limited.

Standing over 33cm high, 8007 C-3PO included the droid’s distinctive silver right leg, plus a nifty play feature. Pressing the droid’s torso resulted in the model exploding and its head and arms popping off. At the time, fans were encouraged to pick up both 8007 C-3PO and the 8008 Stormtrooper companion set, with a blast from the Technic soldier also activating Threepio’s destruction.

If that wasn’t enough, 8007 C-3PO could even be rebuilt as a strange speeder or starship, although the creation was never named as such. The model was then reissued in 2002 as part of a Star Wars 25th anniversary collectors set that also included 8009 R2-D2, presenting both droids as Technic models. The LEGO Star Wars set was available from Toys R Us stores and came with an exclusive limited edition commemorative poster.

We’re still waiting for official details and a listing for 75398 C-3PO to come through, so we’ll bring you more images and confirmation of full international pricing as soon as they’re available.
