LEGO Technic’s racing yachts have come a long way
Six years and exactly 100 sets later, LEGO Technic is revisiting racing yachts and it’s safe to say that the builds have come a long way.
The recent reveal of 42174 Emirates Team New Zealand AC75 Yacht may be monumental for the theme in that it’s one of the biggest and most expensive boats in the theme – an uncommon vehicle for LEGO Technic. Don’t overlook though that it comes six years and exactly 100 set numbers after 42074 Racing Yacht, which debuted the specific vehicles within the theme.
42074 Racing Yacht was released in 2018 for £24.99 / $39.99 / €29.99 and features 330 pieces. In comparison, 42174 Emirates Team New Zealand AC75 Yacht is £104.99 / $119.99 / €119.99 for 962 pieces and launches on August 1, 2024.
Both include flexible sail elements and you can even see the lines on the sails in 42074 Racing Yacht and lines in the same position on those in 42174 Emirates Team New Zealand AC75 Yacht.
The 2018 set’s features include a turning wheel and a moving tiller to operate the rudder and winches to move the sails. While its colour scheme is nearly the complete opposite of the 2018 model, 42174 Emirates Team New Zealand AC75 Yacht has the same array of features with the addition of a display stand and functions beneath the hull.
This includes the foil wings which can be moved and a pneumatic mechanism to operate the cant arms. While there are different kinds of racing yachts, 42174 Emirates Team New Zealand AC75 Yacht appears to be a nominal improvement in accuracy, the number of features and size.
That comes at an increase in price compared to the 2018 build, but that’s arguably to be expected given the number of pieces, the larger sail elements and more.
42174 Emirates Team New Zealand AC75 Yacht is coming to shelves for £104.99 / $119.99 / €119.99 with 962 pieces on August 1, 2024. It’s the latest LEGO Technic take on a sailing yacht, both 100 set numbers and six years later.
