LEGO’s foray into space isn’t reserved to 2024 sets

The LEGO Group’s focus on space might not stay with the 2024 sub-theme of sets, with plans underway to bring LEGO space into the real world.

The American theme park is getting a space-themed rollercoaster, indicative of the LEGO Group’s ongoing focus on space. 2024 has seen the release of a number of space sets across several themes, with still more believed to be on the way. What’s more, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that LEGOLAND California will get a new space-themed rollercoaster, thanks to approval during a Carlsbad planning commission meeting in mid-January.

LEGO Galaxy would replace the current driving school attraction, which will find a new home near the firefighting section of the park. An internal report for the project describes the new area as having “a ‘space’ theme where park guests will train for space exploration, meet other intergalactic travellers, and blast off on missions into the Lego Galaxy”.

Further documents for the plans include a rollercoaster where riders embark on “an exploration mission into the uncharted LEGO Galaxy in their own customised LEGO spacecraft” and located in a “space port”-themed building, as well as a spinning ride, a children’s play area based around an alien spaceship, and a separate play area for even younger builders.

The new area of the park won’t open until the end of 2025 at the earliest, highlighting that the LEGO Group’s focus on space isn’t a one-year event. While there are a lot of sets launching under the sub-theme this year, the fact that there will be a space-themed rollercoaster launching next year suggests that there might be more space-themed LEGO sets or content continuing after the end of 2024. That’s pure speculation for now, of course, but keep your eyes peeled on the brick-built planets down the line.
