Star Wars: The Acolyte breaks new record for Disney+ in 2024

The Acolyte made its debut on Disney+ last week and the latest viewing figures for the Star Wars show see it break a new record for the streaming platform.

In keeping with Disney’s typical rhythm for new shows, DIsney+ saw the premiere of the first two episodes of The Acolyte, to be followed by weekly drops of one new episode every seven days. In its first five days, the Star Wars show racked up a massive 11.1 million views on the platform.

That’s more than any other Disney+ show from 2024, making it the biggest launch of the year on the streaming service and winning out over other high-profile releases, like Marvel’s Echo, X-Men ’97, and Disney’s new collaboration with the BBC bringing Doctor Who to the platform.

Star Wars shows have tended to be one of the most successful areas for Disney+, with oversaturation in the MCU leading high-level execs like Marvel’s head of streaming, television and animation Brad Winderbaum and even Disney CEO Bob Iger to note that quantity would be parred down in the hope of improving quality and audience reception.

The Mandalorian has been a cornerstone of welcoming new fans to the Star Wars community, while shows like Ahsoka and Obi-Wan Kenobi have recaptured long-term fans who’ve been around since the animated Rebels days. Now, it seems the studio has hit another success with The Acolyte, even at this early stage of the show’s lifetime.

On the brickier side of things, could the show’s popularity mean some LEGO Star Wars sets based on the live-action show? It’s certainly possible and there doesn’t appear to be a statute of limitations on these adaptations. After all, we’ve only just had sets like 75386 Paz Vizsla and Moff Gideon Battle come onto shelves on June 1, despite the corresponding episode airing well over a year ago, on April 12, 2023 – so never say never.

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.

This is a record for 2024 – but is by no means a success.
Although Nielsen and Samba use different metrics, we know the Acolyte did worse than Ahsoka – which in turn did worse than Mando, Obi-Wan and BoBF.

if any thing, this points out how terrible Disney+ is in 2024
